Game of Themes: Keeping Up with the Baratheons

CliffsNotes April 7, 2015

Welcome to the Dragonstone Luau! Melisandre holds a burning ceremony on the beach, making human sacrifices to the Lord of Light including Queen Selyse’s brother for his lack of faith.

Stannis and Selyse argue about their disfigured daughter, Shireen, and Selyse encourages Melisandre to speak with her. Privately, Selyse tells Melisandre that she wishes to leave Shireen behind when they go to the North, but Melisandre tells her that Shireen’s presence will be required in the North.

Melisandre visits Shireen and tells the child that the Faith of the Seven is all lies and that she should only believe in the Lord of the Light.

Ser Davos still disapproves of Melisandre and her hold on Stannis and his wife. Once the news of Joffrey’s death reaches them, Davos tells Stannis they must act soon to secure the Iron Throne. In the meantime, Shireen teaches Davos to read.

Since they lost the Battle of the Blackwater Stannis and Davos need money – and they need it bad. They negotiate funding from the Iron Bank of Braavos by promising to take down Tywin Lannister who happens to be in huge debt.

In the season finale, we finally get to see Stannis Baratheon successfully pull something off. He comes swooping into the wildling camp North of the Wall with hundreds of troops to effectively end the siege and save Jon Snow. Jon voices his support of Stannis as the true king of Westeros, and remembers his father Ned Stark died trying to prove this.

And to end on a creepy note, Jon notices Melisandre staring at him through the flames once they’ve all returned to Castle Black.
