Game of Themes: Keeping Up with the Lannisters

CliffsNotes April 3, 2015

Those feisty blonde Lannisters always give us something to talk about, what did they get up to in Season Four? Let’s see…

Joffrey*

Joffrey begins the season continuing to torment everyone around him as he prepares to wed Margaery Tyrell. Finally it’s Joffrey’s wedding day. Joffrey humiliates Tyrion during his wedding and then forces Tyrion to serve him wine. As Joffrey drinks the wine, he begins to choke… fizzle… vomit… and points to Tyrion… then gruesomely dies. Ding dong the Evil Baby King Joffrey is dead.

* although his last name isn’t Lannister, we all know there’s no Baratheon blood in those veins

Tyrion

Tyrion has now been wed to Sansa, who’s depressed and mourning the loss of her brother and mother. He also decides to send Shae away to protect her from his family. At the royal wedding, Tyrion is arrested for poisoning King Joffrey, for he gave him the cup of poisoned wine and his hatred for Joffrey is well known. Tyrion ruins his chances of getting off during trial by declaring his hatred of everyone in King’s Landing. Oberyn Martell acts as Tyrion’s champion in his trial by combat, but he loses and Tyrion is sentenced to death.

However, Jaime doesn’t want to see his brother die (aww) and helps Tyrion escape from his jail cell to a waiting ship. On his way out, Tyrion finds Shae in his father’s bed. Tyrion goes on a bit of a killing spree and strangles Shae, then shoots Tywin on the toilet with a crossbow before Tyrion escapes.

Tywin

Tywin is his usual calculated and cunning self in this season. Tywin really ticks off his children by, surprise surprise, giving them commands. He wants Jaime to return to Casterly Rock and continue the Lannister bloodline, and he’s arranged a marriage for Cersei with her future daughter-in-law’s brother Loras Tyrell. Both children refuse to play along.

Tywin presides over Tyrion’s trial and announces Tyrion’s death sentence once his champion, Oberyn falls. That night, Tyrion escapes from his cell and shoots Tywin on the toilet. For such a dignified guy, it’s quite an undignified way to bite it.

Cersei

Cersei is initially very angry with Jaime for being captured and for leaving her alone for so many months; she tells him they can no longer be together. However, later on Cersei and Jaime “reconnect” in the same room as their son Joffrey’s dead body. Double ick. After Joffrey’s death, Cersei’s sole purpose in life becomes to avenge her son and see Tyrion suffer the consequences.

Cersei tells Tywin she refuses to marry Loras Tyrell, and if he makes her do it she will expose her incestuous relationship with Jaime and the true lineage of her children to the Seven Kingdoms. From Tywin’s reaction, we can tell he probably hadn’t gathered as much about his kids. Yikes.

Jaime

Okay we admit it: we almost like Jaime Lannister in Season Four. His brotherly and honorable instincts seem to have kicked in just in time. Jaime insists on staying in the Kingsguard (one-handed) to stay close to Cersei. After Tyrion’s arrest, Jaime visits Tyrion in jail. Jaime then finds Brienne to task her with finding Sansa Stark (who escaped during the wedding) and to keep her safe from Cersei’s minions.

During Tyrion’s trial, Jaime goes to Tywin and offers to return to Casterly Rock if Tyrion is pardoned (quite the sacrifice). After Tyrion’s death sentence, Jaime helps Tyrion escape from jail and secure passage to the free cities.

We like Jaime a whole lot more, but he’s also still sleeping with this sister. So, there’s that.
